Active Listening

Active listening is a type of listening in which the listener gives the speaker their undivided attention, demonstrates verbally and/or nonverbally that they are listening attentively, and focuses on learning from the other person rather than on what to say next. According to the Center for Creative Leadership, active listening includes six skills: paying attention, withholding judgment, reflecting, clarifying, summarizing and sharing. Many training programs for leaders and salespeople include content on active listening, as both leaders and salespeople must listen well in order to do their job successfully. Active listening is also a key capability for training professionals and coaches.
